What is Rosebyrne Manor?

Posted by Andy Lawrence on

Rosebyrne Manor is a game for 2-5 players in which one player takes on the role of the Spirit of Lord Kallidus, while all other players take on the roles of Adventurers.

The Kallidus player controls all the denizens of the Manor and its encounters. The Adventurers investigate and complete the quests, or plumb the depths of the Manor looking for fortune and fame.

In the very bottom pits of Rosebyrne Manor, things too foul for the light of day stir. These are the unholy forces of the Despised, a cult of necromantic fanatics and dark debauchery.

Shrouded in black robes, the shrunken and leathery-faced followers of the Despised cast blood rites in the dark basements and scry upon the living, guarded in the dark by undead sentinels.

Flesh-eaters and ghouls prowl at their behest and shambling shells of former House Kallidus servants dig deeper for them, always digging and sifting the detritus in search of something.

Yuroth the Ashen. Yuroth the Dark. Yuroth the Forsaken. Each describes an unholy being full of ambition and hatred sewn into his dark heart.

Yuroth has come to Rosebyrne Manor for one reason: The Avatar Suit. He wishes to combine the power of this awesome artefact with the one vestige he has of his god, an unliving arm of brass and silver attached to Yuroth by his right elbow.

He believes that the mechanical arm will grow and transform if intertwined with the divine properties of the Avatar Suit. It is this wish to achieve that drives the evil being, as well as a chance to be seen in his master’s eye.
Throughout all of this, the people of Rosebyrne need help Defending the town, and righting age-old wrongs visited upon them by the Manor and its inhabitants.

In Rosebyrne Manor the players create iconic fantasy hero characters such as the Warrior, Cleric or Mage or Ranger.

These heroes form an adventuring party that investigates the happenings at the Manor, the dungeon underneath, and the area around the town of Rosebyrne, embarking on various quests from treasure hunting to finding lost town residents and undertaking those quests that lead them to the dark depths under the manor and what lurks below.

The odd happenings in the manor and the strange powers that live within the rooms and corridors making each visit to the manor unique.

The maps used in the game are dynamically generated and filled with encounters, monsters, treasure, and NPC’s some that help the hero’s and some that hinder them.

The quests themselves have choice points where the players must make choices as to what they will do at that point in the story, performing skill checks for some choices, such as opening locks on prisoner’s chains or solving puzzles for others.

These choices may have immediate results, and some with far reaching influence on the overall story of the game. These results of these choices are found in the Quest Journal that accompanies each quest, and sometimes lead to more choices that need to be taken and the results resolved before the heroes can move on with their quest.

Hero characters can be kept from game to game in a campaign system, earning experience and going up in levels to increase their skills and gain new abilities, using the equipment and items they find on their quests to help push deeper into the dungeon under the manor.

They can also shop in the town of Rosebyrne buying supplies and special equipment that is unlocked as the quests are completed, and townsfolk rescued.

So, sharpen your blades, strap on your armor, memorize your spells, pray to the God of Good Fortune, and refill your quivers, the Town of Rosebyrne needs you adventurer!
