What is the Story of Rosebyrne?

We have said that Rosebyrne's story runs on a choose your own adventure engine, effectively a full gamebook turned into a boardgame, allowing you to collectively influence the outcome of the story. But what is that story?

It starts with a sinister cult of necromancers and death worshipers have invaded the mansion. They are led by a twisted man with one thought on his mind, to find a powerful artefact that he believes can help him
channel the power of his dark god:

For almost a century, the mansion of Lord Kallidus has lain empty and abandoned after he and his family mysteriously disappeared. Over the years, more and more adventurers have travelled to the town of Rosebyrne to take a stab at the nearby Manor’s hidden wealth and unknown possibilities.

The town is reaping the benefits from newfound interest in the remains of their former master’s house, but some say that darkness has crept back into the old home. A fell wind drives through the town at night, and wicked things creep around its outskirts. Rumours swirl of lights shining from the manor house and worse…

The old Rosebyrne Manor is a gigantic mansion built off the northern edge of the town. Many of its rooms have lain undisturbed for a century. Others are under the influence or even inhabited by dark and sometimes disturbing forces.

No one has ever been able to properly map the labyrinthine halls of Rosebyrne Manor, as the portion above ground is merely the tip of an iceberg of granite chambers and cobwebbed passages.

Things dwell in the deep parts of the Manor, some lone horrors, and others as rag-tag bands of creatures, and all of these things are hungry for food, wealth, and power.

In the very bottom pits of Rosebyrne Manor, things too foul for the light of day stir.  These are the unholy forces of the Despised, a cult of necromantic fanatics and dark debauchery.  Shrouded in black robes, the shrunken and leathery-faced followers of the Despised cast blood rites in the dark basements and scry upon the living, guarded in the dark by undead sentinels. Flesh-eaters and ghouls prowl at their behest and shambling shells of former House Kallidus servants dig deeper for them, always digging and sifting the detritus in search of something.

Yuroth the Ashen. Yuroth the Dark.  Yuroth the Forsaken.  Each describes an unholy being full of ambition and hatred sewn into his dark heart. Yuroth has come to Rosebyrne Manor for one reason: the Avatar Suit.  He wishes to combine the power of this awesome artefact with the one vestige he has of his god, an unliving arm of brass and silver attached to Yuroth by his right elbow.

He believes that the mechanical arm will grow and transform if intertwined with the divine properties of the Avatar Suit. It is this wish to achieve that drives the evil being, as well as a chance to be seen in his master’s eye.

Heroes of Rosebyrne

The Base Game includes four playable heroes, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, and ties to the story.

These are the first four brave souls to venture into the grounds of Rosebyrne and help the people of the town solve the mysteries and horrors of the manor.

Yet Rosebyrne will not remain quiet for very long. Word spreads. Whispers travel. New figures arrive at the town’s gates with each passing day, drawn by rumours of opportunity, danger, and something far older stirring within the manor’s walls. Keep any eye out for new heroes arriving and being available to play.

  • Character portrait of a dwarf fighter named Gadrin Daehew with a dark background and 'Roseburne' logo.

Gadrin was exiled from his home under the Cindersmoke Mountains after false charges, brought by someone he once trusted, left him disgraced before the Council of Elders. Cast into the surface world, he wandered the Yawning Woods, struggling to survive in unfamiliar
territory. Eventually, the distant lights of Rosebyrne Town drew him from the trees.

  • A member of the Order of Auldwin, Tybar has dedicated his life to exploring the dark corners of the world, seeking forgotten lore and magical artifacts. Though he claims to be on a secret mission of great importance, the truth is less heroic—he has yet to make any discoveries of note and is often overshadowed by his peers. Tybar’s journey to Rosebyrne Manor is motivated as much by personal ambition as by a desire to assist the town, though he maintains an air of scholarly authority and charm to mask his true intentions.

  • Elenrahir is one of the Ferediroitaur, elite hunters tasked with guarding the ancient forests. Initially drawn to music and art, she chose the bow and blade after a marauding minotaur tribe ravaged her village. Now, with the corruption of Rosebyrne Manor beginning to spread into the woodlands, Elenrahir journeys to the town to confront the evil and protect her ancestral forest from decay.

  • Abandoned as a child at the Orphanage of Shintar, Brandal was taken in by the Church of Good Fortune. Afflicted with a twisted spine and withered arm, he was an outcast, learning to observe and assist others quietly. Upon taking the Ritual of Joining, he emerged transformed—his deformities gone, body lean and muscled, eyes shining with holy radiance. From that day, Brandal has devoted himself to the divine, seeking to heal, protect, and guide those around him, while confronting the darkness that creeps across Rosebyrne.

  • Kronir hails from the Rhagdar Mountains, his tribe shrouded in mystery. He experiences life with unrestrained intensity, emotions swinging between joy, anger, and fury at a moment’s notice. While chaotic socially, he has repeatedly saved his companions through sheer force and determination.

Now in Rosebyrne, Kronir seeks the thrill of combat and the glory of battle, facing monsters and challenges with unrelenting fury.

  • Formerly a housekeeper in Shintar, Hartlin discovered her Elemental power after a furious outburst accidentally destroyed her employer’s home. She wandered until an abandoned waystation became her refuge, where her abilities flared again, accompanied by visions of flames and a cream rose encircled with thorns.

Hartlin now seeks to master her elemental gift, confronting the growing darkness of Rosebyrne Manor with fire, precision, and power.

  • Elau claims to hail from Shintar and is an expert in "urban exploration and problem-solving".

His past is a series of daring adventures, scams, and thefts, yet in Rosebyrne, he appears genuinely committed to exploring the Manor and assisting his companions.

He rarely explains his motives, preferring tales of exploits, but his skills speak for themselves, making him an invaluable ally.

  • A tragic orphan rescued by a sister of Balazaar, Archael was trained as a Slayer by the secretive Brotherhood. She spent ten years mastering stealth, combat, and tracking, driven by the loss and pain that fuel her powers. Her mentor disappeared before Archael completed her training, leaving her to take her name and pursue her path alone.

She now hunts the dark forces spreading from Rosebyrne Manor, spreading justice and vengeance in equal measure, wherever it is needed.
